1997 acting ballot: best lead and supporting performances

It is a personal, alternative ranking of the year's best acting performances in cinema: the top five in each of the four acting categories, with performances from around the world next to the usual favourites. 14 of the 20 picks on the 1997 ballot are from outside the United States (England, Japan, Ireland, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Iran, Canada and China).
